Ferrera first met actor, director, and writer Ryan Piers Williams when he cast her in a student film at USC. The couple became engaged in June 2010, and married on June 27, 2011. On January 1, 2018, Ferrera and Williams announced that they were expecting their first child. She announced on her Instagram page on May 29, 2018, that she had given birth that month to a boy, Sebastian. On May 4, 2020, Ferrera gave birth to a girl, Lucia. On July 1, 2020, Ferrera announced that she and Williams had been together for a total of 15 years.

In 2018, her edited anthology of stories, American Like Me: Reflections on Life Between Cultures, was published by Gallery Publishing Group.

America Ferrera won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series back in 2007 for her work in Ugly Betty, but she says wasn’t able to enjoy the night.

It was a historic win for America as she was the first Latina woman to win the category.

America is now opening up about the moment in an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast.

“When I won the Emmy, I can’t bring myself to watch that because the only thing I remember about being on that stage, accepting that Emmy, was the feeling that no one in the room thought I deserved it,” she said (via ET Canada). “And that’s a shame.”

“ ‘She doesn’t really deserve that. What is she really doing in that role? That role is not interesting enough, it’s not dark enough, it’s not edgy enough.’ You know, all of the bullsh–t,” America added. “Which doesn’t enter your mind on its own. There were people in my life perpetuating those narratives and making me feel like I hadn’t earned this moment. When I look back at that time, my heart aches for that 22-year-old girl, who didn’t get to really enjoy those moments.”

In July 2002, Ferrera made her first TV movie, Gotta Kick It Up! for The Disney Channel. While at drama camp at Northwestern University that same year, she made her feature film debut in the indie sleeper hit Real Women Have Curves. Ferrera followed this with roles in both television (Touched by an Angel) and film (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Lords of Dogtown). Ferrera received a 2005 Movieline Breakthrough Award. She was also in the movie Plainsong, based on the novel by Kent Haruf which starred Aidan Quinn and Rachel Griffith. Ferrera plays a pregnant teenager, Victoria Roubideaux, who has been kicked out of her mother’s house, and she is taken in by two kindly brothers who live alone on a farm. How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer came out in 2005, and she starred as the third generation of a Mexican-American family. She played Bianca, a 17 year old who while on the verge on womanhood is fed up with the boys in her neighborhood but finds romance with another boy from a neighboring town. In 2006, she appeared in the short film 3:52 which won the Audience Award at the San Diego Women Film Festival. Later that year she starred in Steel City which received nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards and the Sundance Film Festival.

In December 2005, she appeared in the off-Broadway play Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, directed by Trip Cullman.

She landed the lead role of Betty in Ugly Betty in 2006. Ugly Betty is an adaptation of the Colombian hit telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, in which Ferrera portrays a girl whom her peers find extremely unattractive, thus the series title. As Betty Suarez, Ferrera wears braces, has bushy eyebrows and a disheveled wig, and make-up and clothing intended to downplay her own looks, in contrast to most of the «glammed up» characters; Ferrera herself coined the term «Bettification» to describe the process of creating her onscreen persona. The first run of Ugly Betty was completed with the series finale on ABC-TV on Wednesday, April 14, 2010.

For her role in Ugly Betty, Ferrera won the 2007 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical. As a result of the award, she was congratulated by the U.S. House of Representatives as being a role model for young Hispanics. On January 28, 2007, Ferrera won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Female Actor in a Comedy Series. She also starred in and was the executive producer for the poignant short film Muertas.

In 2007, TIME chose Ferrera as one of the top artists and entertainers in their «Time 100: The Most Influential People In The World» issue. In July 2007, Ferrera won Imagen Foundation’s Creative Achievement Award.

On September 16, 2007, Ferrera won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress — Comedy Series for her Ugly Betty role, the first Latina to win in that category. In the summer of 2007, she wrapped filming on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, the sequel to the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, as Carmen. Among other film work, she supplied the voice of Astrid in the hit animated film How to Train Your Dragon (2010). She appears in The Dry Land which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and ran at the Dallas International Film Festival where it won the top prize in the Filmmaker Award for Best Narrative Feature.

During the 2010-2011 TV season she guest starred on the successful Julianna Margulies-starred CBS-TV series The Good Wife.

Beginning November 7, 2011, Ferrera makes her London stage debut playing Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago in London’s West End.

Political activities

Ferrera has been politically active. During the 2008 presidential primaries, Ferrera, alongside Chelsea Clinton and Amber Tamblyn, led the Hillblazers organization in support of Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Ferrera attended both the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina and the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. At the 2016 convention, she addressed the delegates as a speaker, sharing the stage with Lena Dunham.

Ferrera has been active in getting Latinos in the United States to vote through her involvement with the organization Voto Latino by appearing on various news programs.

Ferrera was the opening speaker for the Women’s March on Washington on January 21, 2017.

Fighting sexual harassment

In October 2017 Ferrera began her participation in the #MeToo campaign, publicly revealing that she was sexually harassed when she was 9 years old. She did not reveal any details about the harassment or the person who harassed her. In January 2018, Ferrera was a founding member of the Time’s Up legal defense fund.

America Ferrera Will Return for ‘Superstore’ Season 6 Premiere After Her Farewell Was Cut Short

The season five finale of Superstore aired tonight and this season was supposed to feature the farewell of America Ferrera‘s character Amy.

America, who is pregnant with her second child, made the decision earlier this year to leave the show, but now she will return for one more episode in season six amid the abrupt end to the season.

The final episode of Superstore‘s season was not filmed because of production shutdowns due to the ongoing health crisis. Showrunner Jonathan Green has said that America has agreed to return for the season six premiere to wrap up her character’s farewell.

“That was a pretty immediate decision. As soon as it became clear that we weren’t going to be able to shoot the finale, she said, ‘I need to come back for the first episode.’ Obviously we were glad to hear that… It just wouldn’t feel right to send her off without a proper farewell episode,” Jonathan told TV Line.

Early life and education

Ferrera, the youngest of six children, was born in Los Angeles, California. Her parents, América Griselda Ayes and Carlos Gregorio Ferrera, were originally from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and emigrated to the United States in the mid-1970s. Her mother worked as the director of the housekeeping staff for one of the Hilton Hotels, and stressed the importance of higher education. When she was 7, her parents divorced and her father returned to Honduras. Ferrera was estranged from her father when he died there in 2010.

Ferrera was raised in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles, where she attended Calabash Street Elementary School, George Ellery Hale Middle School and El Camino Real High School. From the time she was seven years old, when she landed a small role in a school production of Hamlet and then at age 10, the role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver!, Ferrera knew that she wanted to be a performer. Her first play was Romeo and Juliet, and although only in the third grade, she went to the junior high school and auditioned and got the role of the Apothecary. She acted in school plays and community theatre in Los Angeles throughout her youth, though with little help from her mother, who insisted that she pursue other interests because she was concerned her daughter would not be treated fairly. Ferrera disliked her first name as a child and went by her middle name, «Georgine», until she began acting professionally.

While at El Camino High School, she took acting lessons at the age of 15 and was able to pay for them by waiting tables and babysitting. She entered University of Southern California (USC) on a presidential scholarship, double majoring in theatre and international relations. She dropped out to focus on her acting career but completed her bachelor’s degree in May 2013.

America Ferrera Gets Candid About the Anxiety She Felt Giving Birth During Pandemic

America Ferrera is opening up about the anxiety she faced giving birth amid a pandemic.

The 36-year-old Ugly Betty actress opened up on the Katie’s Crib podcast on Thursday (May 21) about delivering her second child with husband Ryan Piers Williams during the global health crisis.

“I just know I have to put up my filter because I don’t have the emotional capacity to let that in. I realized that really early on for me,” she said during the podcast.

“For me I could feel my heartrate and my anxiety and my blood pressure and everything go up and also not being able to close my eyes at night and go to sleep because I’m sitting there with all these news stories swirling in my head,” she went on to explain.

“Just realizing early on that I had to be very disciplined about what I let in because it just doesn’t serve you especially in a time when you don’t need that added stress when you’re pregnant.”

America Ferrera Surprised With Virtual Birthday Party & Calls It ‘Joyous and Memorable’

America Ferrera got the biggest surprise ever for her 36th birthday over the weekend – a virtual birthday party!

The Superstore actress took to Instagram and shared pics from the happy event with her fans.

“My sneaky and dear husband @ryanpierswilliams surprised me with a zoom birthday party yesterday!” America shared. “I have to be honest, I’ve seen a million of these posted and thought ‘how could that be fun?’ But as you can see from these pictures, I was completely overwhelmed with joy & love!”

America continued that she had “no idea how much I wanted to be with my community and to see the faces I love so much! @ryanpierswilliams you turned my quarantine birthday into one of the most joyous and memorable! You filled me with love and cake and ended it with a virtual dance party!! You are the best.”

America Ferrera Shares Empowering Message To Pregnant Women During Coronavirus Pandemic

America Ferrera is sharing some positive words to pregnant women everywhere as they experience the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

While showing off her growing baby bump in the pic, taken by her husband Ryan Piers Williams, the -year-old actress assured pregnant mamas everywhere that they got this.

“As this baby grows inside and I attempt to breathe through the fears and unknowns of this time, I am thinking of all you other mamas bringing new life into this world right now,” she wrote.

America continued, “And also all of the women across generations and centuries and borders who have and are currently birthing new life in the midst of so many extraordinary and daunting circumstances. Life is a miracle, and mamas make it possible through their strength and power.”

“Hang in their pregnant mamas! We got this.”

America announced she was expecting baby number two with Ryan just before the new year.

America Ferrera Celebrates ‘Wondrous, Magical’ Son Sebastian’s Birthday On Instagram

America Ferrera is celebrating her son’s Sebastian Piers Williams birthday with an adorable Instagram.

The 36-year-old Superstore star shared a sweet message for Sebastian‘s 2nd birthday.

“Bazzito Burrito is 2 today! ,” America captioned the cute photo with Sebastian‘s face covered with a party emoji. “What an amazing 2 years it’s been with this wondrous, magical, delicious little guy. Celebrating a love like no other with cake for breakfast!! .”

She also shared that she ate new daughter Lucia‘s piece of cake for her: “…will deliver to her via breast milk.”

America and husband Ryan welcomed daughter Lucia earlier this month and she also opened up about the anxiety she felt giving birth to her.
